Introduction to Solar Energy Storage
How do solar batteries work?
Before we talk about the energy storage system, let’s recap on how a solar battery works. Solar panels generate power during the day when the sun is shining. This power is used first to supply energy to the any needs of the home and surplus energy is then typically exported back into the grid. Some energy retailers offer a feed-in tariff to buy energy back off the customer. As an alternative to exported energy back into the grid, the surplus power can be used to charge a solar battery. The home energy storage system can then be discharged to power appliances in the house in the evening, or can be exported back into the grid at peak demand times on the network for a higher feed in tariff.
Solar batteries store energy in DC. Batteries can be connected in via DC cables to a hybrid solar inverter. Some batteries come with their own inverter built in and can therefore simply be connected to the main switchboard like any other AC appliance.
What are the benefits of solar battery storage?
Reduce your electricity bill.
If your utility raises electricity rates, you can avoid that with a battery. Battery storage lets you leverage low-cost energy that has already been generated and stored, ensuring your rates stay low and don’t affect your monthly budget. In some cases, you can even sell the energy you’re storing back to the grid when the rates are higher and bank the profit.Better monitoring.
A solar-plus-storage system can help you to better track the energy your system is generating through monitoring capabilities, providing an enhanced level of transparency and precision. These systems allow you to track the energy your home is producing and using in real time.Reduce your carbon footprint.
By installing energy storage, you're doing your bit to help towards a Net Zero future as you're generating and using renewable energy. Are home solar batteries a worthwhile investment?
Batteries are still relatively expensive and the payback time will often be longer than the warranty period (typically 10 years) of the battery. Nevertheless, for some homes, a storage battery can make economic sense. Households with high power consumption that are savvy about using their solar-generated and stored power can make the battery pay for itself in less than 10 years. And many people are investing in home battery storage now, or at least ensuring their solar PV systems are battery-ready. Batteries are often seen as being less about the pure economics and more about being as independent from the grid as possible.
Therefore, we recommend you get two or three quotes from reputable installers before committing to a battery installation. You should make sure of a strong warranty, and commitment of support from your supplier and battery manufacturer in the event of any faults.
